HENRY BONHAM Box and 100 armorial counters (L11)             £ 5250

This superb box and part-set of 100 matching armorial gaming counters was made for Henry Bonham circa 1780. The box and counters all bear the crest of a mermaid holding in her dexter hand a looking glass, with  the monogram HB for Henry Bonham. The counters have the rare 'harlequin pattern' to the reverse and are in superb bright mother-of-pearl; they were made at the time when the very finest quality mother-of-pearl was being used in Canton.  There are 65 long counters, 26 round and 9  'square' counters. The lid of the box has evidence of some wear to the gilding as shown. These counters were probably ordered by Captain George Bonham for his brother, Henry Bonham MP for Rye.
